It's been all kinds of busy lately with the moving and all, but atleast I've managed to get some cakes done. Here are my friends' housewarming party cake and our own housewarming cake.
 

Ystäväni tilasi kakun ja sain siihen täsin vapaat kädet kaiken paitsi laktoosipitoisuuden suhteen. Kakun tuli olla vähänlaktoosinen, mutta tein siitä saman tien laktoosittoman. Maalailin kakun päälle tyyliin sopivan kuvan ja päällystin kakun reunat mustilla marsipaanilehdillä. Kakku on kaakaopohjainen ja täytteenä on mustikoita sekä suklaatuorejuustotäytettä.

A friend of mine ordered a cake from me and I had free hands to make it in anything except the amount of lactose it had. The cake was supposed to be low lactose but I made it lactose free just in case. I painted a suiting image on top of the cake and covered the cake's edges with black marzipan leaves. The base is a cocoa base and the cake is filled with blueberries and chocolate cream cheese filling.
 

Oma tuparikakkumme piti tehdä hieman kiireellä, joten koristeita en ehtinyt niin kovasti miettimään. Tein pari jaloleinikkiä koristeeksi Eben mallin mukaan ja päällystin kakun suklaaganachella sekä suklaalastuilla. Koska kakku ei ollut vielä aivan riittävän suklainen, pursotin päälle hieman suklaakoristeita. Kakkupohja sisältää kaakaota ja täytteenä on pätkistäyte.

I had to make our own housewarming cake in a bit of a hurry so I didn't have time to think about the decorations so much. I made some Persian buttercup flowers with Ebe's instructions and glazed the cake with chocolate ganache and chocolate shavings. Since the cake didn't quite have enough chocolate yet, I piped some chocolate decorations on top. The base has cocoa in it and the cake is filled with Pätkis filling.

Sain pitkästä aikaa pari kakkutilausta. Tilaukset olivat synttärikakkuja hyvin eri-ikäisille mieshenkilöille. Toinen täytti 1 v ja toinen 60 v. 1-vuotiaalle tein myös lahjaksi parin käsinukkeja. Lisäksi innostuin hius- tai nutturapuikkojen teosta, sillä niitä ei tunnu löytyvän oikeastaan mistään nykypäivänä. Nutturapuikoilla saa hyvin pitkät hiukset kiinni joutumatta käyttämään hiuslenkkejä tai pinnejä. Kuvat vat kenties hieman huonompilaatuisia, sillä olen näköjään kadottanut kamerani laturin ja viimeisen kuukauden olen joutunut elämään ilman normaalia kameraa.

I got two cake orders after a long while of no orders at all. They were birtday cakes for two very different age men. One of them turned 1 and the other 60 years old. I also made a pair of hand puppets for the 1 year old. I also got into hair stick making since they are nowhere to be found around here these days. Hair sticks are a great way to get long hair up without having to use pins or hair ties. The pictures may be of a bit lesser quality since I seem to have misplaced my camera charger and the last month have had to live without a normal camera.



Ensimmäisenä 1-vuotiaan kissakakku. Toivomuksena oli sacherkakkumainen kakku, mutta hieman raikkaampi ja päädyimme mustikkaan sekä tuorejuustotäytteeseen. Tuorejuustotäyte on kuten mascarponetäyte, mutta hylavaatimuksen vuoksi ilman mascarponea.

First is the 1 year birthday cake with a cat theme. A sacher type of chocolate cake was the wish but with a little more freshness, so we ended up with bluberry and cream cheese filling. The filling is the same as mascarpone filling but it needed to be low lactose so it was made without the mascarpone.







Seuraavana 60-vuotiskakku. Sain ohjeeksi tehdä kakkua 30 hengelle ja niin teinkin. Kakun on tarkoitus näyttää graniitilta, sillä menihän se geologian professorillemme. Kultaiset numerot sopivat teemaan, sillä onhan sankari kiinnostunut malmeista. Kakku on vaalea peruskakku, jossa on vaniljakreemijauheella vain hieman makeutettua tuorejuustotäytettä ja kerros lemon curdia.

Next is the 60 year birthday cake. I just got instructions to make a cake for 30 people so I did. This cake is supposed to look like granite since it's for our geology professor. It also has golden numbers 60 on top which is consistent with his interest in ores. The cake is normal sugar cake with cream cheese filling sweetened with just a bit of vanilla powder and a layer of lemon curd.

Hiuspuikkoja voi tehdä kaikenlaisesta materiaalista. Tässä kokeilin rautalankaa sekä puuta. Rautalanka on samaa kuin aikaisemmissa koruissa ja puu on tapaninpäivän myrskynkaatosatoa. Pelastin möhkäleen puuta, mahdollisesti vaahteraa, takapihalta myrsyn jälkeen, muotoilin palan sitä haltiamaiseksi keihääksi ja värjäsin sekä öljysin.

Hair sticks can be made of many kinds of material. Here I've tried iron wire and wood. The iron wire is the same as in the jewelery I made before and the wood is fron the big Boxing day storm. I saved a chunk of a fallen tree, possibly maple, from the backyard agter the storm, molded a piece into an elvenlike spear, stained it and oiled it.

Minun oli pakko poistaa blogistani kommentointimahdollisuus, sillä roskakommentteja alkoi olla kirjaintarkistuksenkin jälkeen niin paljon, ettei niitä jaksanut edes poistella. Toivottavasti asiasta ei ole kovasti harmia.

No nyt on joulu ohi ja voin rauhassa paljastaa joululahjapakettien sisällön. Tänä jouluna paketeissa oli lähinnä pehmeitä villaisia asioita, ommeltuja sekä neulottuja. Sain tänä jouluna lahjat jopa melko stressittömästi ajoissa valmiiksi.

Well now Christmas is over and I can reveal what was inside the presents I gave to my family. This year there were mostly soft woolly things, sewn and knitted. This Christmas I even got the presents done quite stresslessly in good time.

Lapasissa on nyt enemmän lonkeroita kämmenen puolella ja niissä on taittuvat peukalon- ja sormiosan päät, jottei aina tarvitsisi ottaa lapasia pois sorminäppäryyttä tarvittaessa. Firstly there's these mittens that I made for my brother. Cthulhu mittens! How cool is that? I got the pattern from Ravelry and modified it a bit. The mittens now have more tentacles on the palm side and they have folding tips on the thumb and fingers so that you don't always have to take the mittens off to do things that need fingers. The yarn was Sandnes Garn Smart colors olive green (8764) and dark grey (1088). Here's my Ravelry project.

Next there's the neck warmer tube that I made for my mom. The pattern I took from a Ravelry sock pattern. I started this project a long time ago and didn't even know at first what I would make, but now I finally finished it. I used Sandnes Garn Kitten Mohair yarn in grey (1076) and lime green. Here's my Ravelry project.

Seuraavaksi huopaprojektejani. Etsiskelin paksumpaa huopaa ympäri Suomea ja meinasinkin aluksi jo tilata kallista sellaista tehtaalta, kunnes löysin askartelukaupan, jossa 3 mm paksua huopaa myytiin metrin pätkissä. Ja tämä kauppa sattui sijaitsemaan siskoni asuinkaupungissa! Ei muuta kuin sisko asioille puolestani ja kasa erivärisiä huopia minulle. Näistä huovista tein tänä jouluna kaksi lahjaa ja varmasti teen vielä useampia. Huopa on mukava materiaali sen vuoksi, ettei se normaalin kankaan lailla purkaannu reunoista. Paksu huopa toimii myös itsestään pehmusteena, minkä vuoksi siitä on hyvä tehdä suojakuoria esimerkiksi kannettaville tietokoneille ja muille senkaltaisille tarvikkeille.

Next there are my felt projects. I was looking for some thicker felt all over Finland and almost ordered some quite expensive felt from a factory until I fould a craft store that sells 3 mm thick felt in one meter long pieces. And what's even better, this store happened to be in the city my sister lives in! So I sent my sister felt shopping for me and got a pile of different color felt. From these felts I made two presents this year and I'm sure to make more. Felt is a nice material because unlike most other textiles it doesn't unravel from the edges. Thick felt also works as a cushion itself which makes it optimal material for laptop covers for example.

Isälleni tein suden muotoisen iPad-suojuksen. Nyt hän voi matkustaa iPad turvallisesti suden suussa. Suden etupuolella on ylimääräinen pieni tasku esimerkiksi laturille tai muille pikkutarvikkeilla. Kun läppä on ylhäällä, näyttää susi ulvovan.

For my father I made a wolf iPad cover. Now he gets to travel with his iPad safely inside this wolf's mouth. It has an extra pocket for some smaller stuff, for example charger in front of it. With the lid up it looks like the wolf is howling.

Siskolleni tein pienen kettuiltalaukun. Vuorasin ketun mummon kangasvarastosta löytyneellä kirkkaanvihreällä retrokankaalla. Ketun sisällä on vuorikankainen pieni tasku ja edessä huopainen pikkutasku. Ketun pään alla läpässä on vielä kännykkätasku. Iltalaukkua voi pitää hihnalla tai ilman, sillä hihnan saa joko piilotettua laukkuun tai otettua pois klipsujen avulla.

For my sister I made a small fox clutch. I lined the fox with some bright green retro fabric from my grandma's stash. Inside the fox there's a small lining fabric pocket, in front a small felt pocket and there's even a small cellphone pocket under the foxes head. The clutch can be worn with or without the strap since it can either be tucked inside the bag or removed with the help of the clips.

Siinä olivat kaikki tekemäni lahjat. Viimeisenä esittelen yhden joulupöydän antimen, juoksutinjuuston. Juusto on erittäin helppo tehdä ja siihen tarvitaan vain muutama ainesosa.

Juoksutinjuusto tai kotijuusto

- 2 l punaista maitoa

- 1 tl juustonjuoksutinta

- n. 2-3 tl suolaa

- sideharsoa ja siivilä tai juustomuotti

- kulho

Lämmitä kädenlämpöiseksi maito, johon on sekoitettu suola. Lisää juustonjuoksutin ja anna juoksettua n. 20-30 min lämpimässä paikassa, kunnes kiinteä aines ja hera erottuvat. Kauho kiinteä juustomassa puhtaalla sideharsolla vuorattuun siivilään tai juustomuottiin. Painele ylimääräinen hera pois ja anna lopun heran valua pois alla olevaan kulhoon yön yli. Kumoa juusto tarjoiluastialle sellaisenaan tai paista sitä uunissa, kunnes juusto saa kauniin kullanruskean pinnan. Itse pidän paistamattomasta juoksutinjuustosta enemmän.

Curdled cheese or home cheese

- 2 l whole milk

- 1 tsp rennet or curdling agent

- 2-3 tsp salt

- cotton gauze or other suitableclean sparse fabric and a sieve or a cheese mold

- a bowl

Warm the milk with salt mixed in up to about body temperature. Mix in the rennet or curdling agent and let it curdle in a warm place for about 20-30 minutes until the solid matter is separated from the whey. Spoon the solid matter into the gauze lined sieve or cheese mold. Press out the excess whey and let the rest of it run into a bowl underneath overnight.  Turn the sieve or mold upside down to extract the cheese on a serving plate or bake it in an oven until it gets a nice golden brown surface. I myself like it more unbaked.

Joulu on jo aivan ovella ja vaikkei täällä etelässä lunta olekaan maassa, saa sitä silti tuprutella tekeleisiinsä. Tässä siis vielä yksi piparkakkurakennelma, joka ei olekaan talo vaan aivan jotain muuta. Kyseessä on susiluola ja sen viisi asukkia. Palat tähän tekeleeseen tein jo muiden piparirakennelmien aikana, mutta en sen koommin ennen tätä ehtinyt tehdä mitään asian hyväksi. Noh, parempi myöhään kuin milloinkaan. Tämä rakennelma pääsee koristamaan vanhempieni luokse.

Christmas is almost here and even though there's no snow here in the south, it's not forbidden to add a little snowy feeling on some crafts. So here's a gingerbread construction that isn't a house this time but rather something else. It's a wolf cave along with its five inhabitants. The pieces I made already during the making of the other houses, but before this I didn't have any time to finish it. Well, it's better late than never, right? This construction will get to decorate my parents' house.

Tässä myös pari kuvaa jouluvaloistani tai oikeastaan kartonkirakennelmasta yhdistettynä halpaan jouluvalosarjaan. Tällaisen kukkaispallon saa tehtyä vähän päälle kymmenestä kartonkiviisikulmiosta taittelemalla ja hieman liimailemalla. Valot ovat hiukan turhan kirkkaat, jotta muodot tulisivat hyvin esille, mutta kelpaahan se minun kukkaruukkuuni koristeeksi.

Here's also some pictures of my christmas lights or rather cardboard combined with cheap christmas lights. This kind of flowery ball takes a bit  over ten cardboard pentagons, some folding and glueing. The lights are a bit too bright to get the shapes to show well, but it will do for my flower pot decoration.

Jouluna järjestetään kaikenlaisia pajoja ympäriinsä ja tällä kertaa kävin pariin otteeseen Seikkailupuiston kynttiläpajassa sekä pikaisesti askartelupajankin puolella. Tein vähän kaiken värisiä kynttilöitä sekä nopean ovikranssin.

At Christmastime there's lots of different workshops around and this time I went to the Adventure park candle workshop twice and also popped to the craft workshop for a little bit. Imade all sorst of colors of candles and also a quick wreath to be put on a door.

Kynttilät tehtiin perinteisellä kastamismenetelmällä eli sydänlanka kastettiin noin kolmisenkymmentä kertaa kuumaa vettä ja kynttilävahaseosta sisältävään astiaan. Tästä muodostui valkoisia kynttilöitä. Kynttilöiden annettiin jäähtyä ja sen jälkeen niitä värjättiin kastamalla ne värillistä kynttilävahaa sisältäviin astioihin. Itse kokeilin vähän kaikenlaisia sopiviksi arvelemiani väriyhdistelmiä.

The candles were made with the traditional dipping method. The center string was dipped about 30 times in a pot which had hot water and candle wax mixture in it. The result of this was white candles. The candles were then let to cool and after that they were dyed by dipping them into pots of colored candle wax. I tried many kinds of different color combinations that pleased my eye.

Askartelupuolella tein nopeasti pajukranssin, jossa oli koristeena sammalta, käpyjä sekä pari paksumpaa pajunkissaista oksaa sekä viininpunaista nauhaa.

In the craft workshop I quickly made a willow wreath which had moss, cones, some thicker pussy willow branches and dark red ribbon fo decoration.

Joulunalusaika on kiireistä, mutta ehdin kuitenkin tehdä taas ystävilleni pikkujoululahjaksi vaahtokarkkeja. Tällä kertaa tein omena- sekä mustikka-mustaherukkavaahtokarkkeja. Ohje on sama kuin viime vuonna käyttämäni. Pakkasin ne sellofaanitötteröihin ja koristeeksi laitoin pikkuruisen neulotun joulutonttusorminuken.

Time before Christmas is always busy, but I did manage again to make my friends some marshmallows as little Christmas presents. This time I made apple and blueberry-black currant marshmallows. The recipe is the same as last year. I packed them into cellophane cones and decorated it with a little knitted Christmas elf finger doll.

No niin, tässäpä toinen osa blogipäivityksestäni eli käsityöt. Joululahjoja olen myös tehnyt, mutta en viitsi niitä paljastaa ennen aattoa, jotteivat tirkistelevät silmät vahingossa saa tietää lahjapakettiensa sisältöä ennenaikaisesti. Tässä siis muutama valmistunut muu käsityö.

So here is the other part of the blog post aka the handcrafts. I have crafted some Christmas presents aswell but I'm not revealing them yet in case there are some visiting peepers who would then find out what they're getting prematurely. So here are some of the other crafts.

Ensimmäinen työ... Olenhan tunnettu pöllöfaniudestani. No mikään ei sen asian suhteen ole muuttunut, sillä teinhän itselleni pienen pöllöolkalaukun erästä risteilyä varten. Tämä nukkuva pöllö on tehty villakankaasta ja vuorattu flanellilla, jämäkankaita siis. Pöllössä on sisällä pieni tasku ja myös ulkopuolella toinen sellainen. Olkahihna on säädettävä.

Firstly, I'm known for going on about owls... Well there's no change to that, because I made myself a little owl messenger bag quickly for a cruise. The sleeping owl is made fro wooly fabric with a flanel lining, just some scrap fabrics I had around. Inside there's a small pocket and on the outside there's another one. The strap is adjustable.

Olin myös akuutissa uuden t-paidan tarpeessa ja ryhdyin kaivelemaan internettiä mullin mallin etsiessäni nopean itse tehtävän paidan ohjetta. Törmäsin YouTubessa ohjeisiin, joissa ei tarvittu ompelukonetta, ainoastaan saksia, ja siitä se ajatus sitten lähti. Otin yhden vähemmän käytetyn t-paidan ja tein sille punotun paidanselkämyksen. YouTubesta ohjeita samankaltaisiin löytyy mm. hakusanoilla "t-shirt cutting". Ihan kiva siitä mielestäni tulikin ja varmasti tulen tekemään näin muillekin paidoille tulevaisuudessa. Kuvat eivät ole parhaat mahdolliset, mutta saanevat kelvata.

I was also in an acute need of a new t-shirt so I started digging through internet to find a quick DIY top to make. I bumped into some no sewing, just scissors instructions in YouTube and that's how it started. I took one of my less used t-shirts and made a weaved back to it. You can find tutorials for similar things by searching for example "t-shirt cutting". Mine turned out quite nice and I'm sure to do things like this in the future aswell. The pictures aren't great, but they'll do.

Joskus kauppojen vaatevalikoima ärsyttää, tai ehkä jopa enemmän joidenkin vaatteiden puute kaupoista. Tämän vuoksi usein teenkin omat vaatteeni, vaikka nuo vaatteet olisivatkin niin yksinkertaisia, että niitä uskoisi kaupoistakin löytyvän. Tällä kertaa tein siis hyvin yksinkertaisen punaisen pitkähihaisen trikoopaidan. Voisihan sellaisia olla kaupoissakin, mutta jos on, ovat ne usein liian lyhyitä tai ainakin hihat ovat. Sen lisäksi kaula-aukot ovat kaupan paidoissa joskus kummallisia ja itse halusin normaalin pyöreän kaula-aukon. Näin saa hihoistakin tehtyä paleleville sormille sopivat.

I am sometimes frustrated with the kind of clothes found in shops or even more with the lack of some kind of clothes found. So often I make my own, even though they sometimes are very simple and you would think they'd be found in shops also. So this time I made a very simple long sleeved stretchy shirt. I guess there could be those in shops but if there is, they're often too short or atleast their sleeves are. On top of that the necklines are often strange and I wanted just a normal round neckline. This way even the sleeves get to be good for the easily freezing fingers.

Vihdoinkin sain aikaiseksi päivittää blogia kaiken kiireen keskellä. Tässä tulee siis viimeisen kuukauden aikana tehtyjä ruoka-aiheisia asioita esiteltyä ja hieman sen jälkeen seuraa käsityöpäivitys.

Finally I got around to blogging in the middle of being all busy. So here's the post about the food related things I've done during the past month or so and after that I'll do the handcraft post.

Ensimmäisenä kakkutilaus, jonka tein marraskuussa lähihoitajalle, joka valmistui jo syyskuussa, mutta jota juhlittiin nyt. Toivottiin kahta 16 hengen samanlaista kirjanmuotoista kakkua, jossa kirjan reunalla istuu tummahiuksinen suurisilmäinen tyttö juhlamekossa. Myös lähihoitajan lakki haluttiin mukaan kakkuun. Kakuissa on tumma kakkupohja ja sisällä valkosuklaatuorejuustotäytettä sekä vadelmia.

First a cake order that I made in November for a sort of nurse who graduated in Seoptember but which was celebrated now. They wished for two identical 16 person cakes in the shape of a book with a dark haired wide eyed girl in a fancy dress sitting on the edge of the book. They also wanted a nurse graduation hat on the cake. The cake base is dark and the filling white chocolate cream cheese filling with raspberries.

Täytteen ja kakkupohjan jämistä tein tämän miniomenahyydykekakun. Murustin kakkupohjan, lisäsin joukkoon hieman sulatettua margariinia ja hyydytin pyöreässä muotissa. Päällä kaadoin lopun valkosuklaatäytteestä ja pinnalle survoin omenia, lisäsin hieman punaista väriä ja hyydytin liivatteella. Tuli oikein hyvää, vaikka pääsinkin vasta pari päivää leipomisen jälkeen kakkua kaverin kanssa maistamaan.

From the leftovers of the cake base and the filling I made this mini apple cheese cake. I crumbled up the cake base, added some molten margarine and hardened in a ring mold. I poured the rest of the white chocolate filling on it and on top I blended some apples, added a bit of red color and coagulated with gelatine. The cake turned out really good even though I didn't get to taste it with a friend until a few days after making.

Ja sitten on aika vuotuiselle piparkakkuhulluudelleni! Tällä kertaa itse asiassa olin kovin kesy ja tein kolme piparkakkutaloa, jotka edelleen odottavat uusia omistajiaan. Ebellä on aina ihania piparkakkutaloja ja tällä kertaa halusin kokeilla tehdä samankaltaisia taloja kuin hänkin. Then again time for my annual gingerbread madness! This time I actually was very tame and made three gingerbread houses that are still waiting for their new owners. Ebe always has lovely gingerbread houses and this time I wanted to try to make similar houses as she does. Here you can also find her instructions to this kind of houses even though I improvised a bit. My Italian meringue on the decorations was not cooperating with me at all but the houses turned out ok anyway.

Viimeisenä nämä muruomenarahkamuffinit sekä -piirakka. Muffinit vein bändikavereille syötäväksi ja piirakan kaveriani piristämään. Ohje oli samankaltainen kuin tässä mustikkapiirakassa, mutta jugurtin sijaan käytin rahkaa ja mustikoiden sijaan päällä omenaviipaleita. Piirakassa omenat olivat murujen alla, kun taas muffineissa päällä.

Lastly these crumb apple quark muffins and pie. The muffins I took to my fellow bandmates and the pie to cheer up a friend. The recipe was similar to this blueberry pie but instead on yoghurt I used quarck and instead of blueberries I used apples on top. On the pie the apples were under the crumbs and on the muffins they were on top of them.

Isänpäivä oli viime sunnuntaina ja tein taas tuttuun tapaani isänpäiväkakun. Isäni harrastaa hanurinsoittoa, joten tein hänelle tuollaisen soittimen muotoisen kakun, tai ainakin jokseenkin, sillä tämä oli melko nopea ja suunnittelematon projekti. Kakkupohja oli vaalea gluteeniton ja sisällä oli valkosuklaatuorejuustotäytettä ja mustikoita. Päällys oli sokerimassan ja marsipaanin seosta. Kai se jokseenkin näyttää harmonikalta, vaikka nappuloita laitoinkin sinne tänne vaikka mitään suunnitelmaa.

Father's Day was last sunday and as I always do, I made Father's Day cake this time also. My father plays the accordion so I made a cake shaped like one or atleast somewhat shaped like one since this project was a very quick and unplanned one. The cake base was gluten free white basic base and filling white chocolate cream cheese filling and blueberries. The top is a mixture of sugar mass and marzipan. I guess it somewhat looks like an accordion even though I put the buttons here and  there with no plan at all.

Sain muutama päivä sitten valmiiksi myös uuden haltiavaikutteisen neuletakin. Kyseessä todellakin siis on takki, sillä laitoin siihen vuorin ja lanka oli paksua . Takin tein tällä Sylvi-villatakin ohjeella, mutta muuntelin sitä hieman. Tarkennuksia löytyy tästä projektistani Ravelrystä. Vuori on pehmeää tummanturkoosia satiinia ja nappien tilalla on soljet. Lanka loppui lankakaupastakin pariin otteeseen tätä tehdessä ja sen vuoksi en vielä ole saanut takkiin taskuja, mutta toivottavasti pian lankaa on taas kaupassa.

A few days ago I also finished my new elven style woolly coat. Even though the pattern is kind of for a cardigan, I added the lining and made it into a proper coat. The yarn was also very thick and warm. I made the coat with this Sylvi pattern, but I did make some changes of my own. You can find more information in this Ravelry link. The lining is made of soft dark turquoise satin and in place of buttons there are clasps. I or actually the yarn shop ran out of yarn twice during the making of this so I haven't been able to make the pockets for it yet, but hopefully soon they'll have more of it again.

Niin, Halloween meni jo pari viikkoa sitten, mutta itse vietin sitä parillakin tavalla hieman myöhässä. Halloween-asu tuli tehtyä UFFilta ostetuista valkoisista polyesterisamettiverhoista (16 €), halvasta ohuesta kankaasta (1 €/m), satiininauhasta sekä peruukista ja valkoisesta vartalomaalista. Halloweenina olin siis banshee.

Bansheet kuuluvat irlantilaiseen tarustoon ja ovat läheisen kuolemasta tai omasta kuolemasta varoittavia surumielisiä naishahmoja. Hahmo voi olla joko vanha tai nuori nainen, joka on pukeutunut täysin valkoiseen tai harmaaseen ja jolla on valkoiset hiukset. Bansheen huuto on selkäpiitä karmiva korkea ääni, joka voi rikkoa lasia ja jonka kuulee vain pian kuoleva ihminen tai hänen perheensä. Tarusta on useampia versioita.

Kerrankin tein siis jotain valkoista. Tein vanhoista verhoista ja halvasta kankaasta pitkän mekon, jota voi myöhemmin kenties käyttää haltiarekvisiittana, sillä tyyli on samankaltainen. Tämä projekti oli erittäin nopea, enkä kiinnittänyt kovin paljon huomiota huolellisuuteen. Kuitenkin olen melko tyytyväinen lopputulokseen ja erityisesti pidän mekon hihoista.

So Halloween passed already about two weeks ago but I spent it a little late in more than one way. My Halloween costume was made from some second hand shop curtains (16 €), cheap white fabric (1 €/m), satin ribbon, a wig and some white body paint. I was a banshee.

Banshees belong to Irish folklore and are melancholic female figures that come to warn about the coming death of a family member or self. The figure is either an old or a young woman who dresses completely in white or grey and who has white hair. The scream or wail of a banshee is a creepy high pitch voice that can shatted glass and that can only be heard by the person who is about to die and their family. There are many versions of this tale.

So for once, I made something white. The curtains and cheap fabric turned into a long dress that can be later used in some elven activities since it is made in similar style. This project was a very fast one and I didn't bother to spend so much time with details and finishing. However I think it turned out quite good and I especially like the sleeves of the dress.

Toinen myöhäinen Halloween-asia oli kurpitsalyhty. En ollut koskaan aiemmin kokeillut sellaisen tekemistä, mutta vieraillessani vanhempieni luona, alkoi tehdä mieli kokeilla kurpitsan kaivertamista, kun äidilläni sattui olemaan tehtävään täydellinen kurpitsa. En halunnut tehdä aivan tavanomaista kurpitsapäätä, joten keksin tehdä kurpitsalyhtypöllön, vaikka se hiukan päätyikin näyttämään Irvikissalta. Leikkasin kurpitsalta siis hatun pois, kaiversin pois sisustan, piirsin pöllön ääriviivat kurpitsaan ja kaiversin ne pienellä veitsellä pois. Aika kiva siitä tuli, vaikka itse sanonkin. Aion varmasti kokeilla tätä vielä uudestaankin.

Another thing I did late for Halloween was a pumpkin lantern. I had never tried doing that before, but visiting my parents I got tempted to trying it since my mom happened to have the perfect pumpkin for the job. I didn't want to make the average pumpkin face so I came up with the pumpkin lantern owl idea. Even though it did end up looking a bit like the Cheshire cat. I cut the hat off the pumpkin, carved out the insides, drew my owl pattern on the pumpkin and cut the bits out with a small knife. I think it turned out quite good. I'm sure to try this again.
