A friend of mine asked me to make a cake that looks like a certain wine bottle for a band night the other day. The request was to make the cake slightly larger than the actual bottle and the cake should be a rich chocolate cake which would not only look like a bottle of wine but the cake should taste like wine aswell.

I tought quite hard how to make the cake taste like wine and I ended up using the wine in two different ways. First I used the wine as liquid in the cake base and second I used it to moisten the cake base. Inside the cake I put cherry jam and my favourite cake filling, the Red velvet cake cream cheese filling. Even though my cake base was a little too thick and heavy for rolling, I decided to try to the "Swiss roll" sort of way of making this cake, since that seemed like the best way to get the shape right. This way would be easiest for a normal thin sugar cake base, but I needed to have liquid (wine) in the base, so the easiest way was to put margarine there aswell and make a heavier base.

Wine bottle cake:

Chocolaty red wine cake base:

- 4 eggs

- 1 1/2 dl sugar

- 100 g margarine

- 100 g dark chocolate

- 1 dl red wine

- 1 tsp baking powder

- 1 tsp baking soda

- 1 tbsp dark cocoa powder

- 3 1/2 dl wheat flour

Mix the dry ingredients together. Melt the chocolate and margarine together. Whip the eggs and sugar fluffy. Start sieving in the dry ingredients, margarine-chocolate mixture and red wine a little at a time while mixing the batter. Bake in 175 degrees celcius for about 20 mins depending on the oven.

Cut the base in a big and a small part so that you will leave the smaller part to make the neck of the bottle. Moisten the large part with red wine and smear some cherry jam and red velvet cake cream cheese filling on top. Roll the cake up with the help of some baking paper and let sit in the fridge for about half an hour. Cut the bottle neck shaped layers from the base piece left. Attack, moisten and fill the bottle neck the same way as the roll part. Smear some more cream cheese filling on the whole bottle to smooth out the surface for the marzipan.

Dye some marzipan grey or green. Since dying the marzipan this dark green all the way through would take a lot of color and could change the taste, I dyed it grey and painted the green color on. This way I also got the bottle a bit shinier than with the dry matte marzipan. Cover the bottle with marzipan. The bottom of the bottle may be a little bit tricky and you may get wrinkles in the marzipan, but you can cover them with a new patch of marzipan. Add the wine bottle labels and other details and your bottle is ready. I also made a little puddle of wine from wine and gelatine sugar next to the cake since my cake was pretending to be an almost empty bottle with just a little bit of wine left in it.
